Carnac
Museum of Prehistory
The Carnac Museum of Prehistory stands at the entrance to the town from Auray as a strong urban signal. Its singular massing and its evocative shaping refer to the mystery of the megalithic alignments it houses. A tall element dominates the landscape, while a low, widely opened gallery brings together reception, social and interpretation spaces, ensuring an active and welcoming connection with the town.
The exhibition route unfolds over three levels, crossed by a facsimile of the great engraved stele of Locmariaquer, which provides a powerful confrontation between visitor and the monumental scale of the megalith. The project draws its inspiration from the megalithic landscape of Carnac, notions of ground, verticality, boundary and materiality, to shape a direct, contrasting and yet deeply contextual architecture.
