Aubusson
International Centre for Tapestry and Woven Art
The Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie was created following the decision of UNESCO, in 2009, to inscribe the know-how of Aubusson tapestry on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The museum, located on the site of the former École Nationale d’Art Décoratif d’Aubusson, opened in 2016.
The extension project takes the form of a poetic dialogue between the garden and the architecture. The building is conceived as a monolith marked with plant imprints directly inspired by Aubusson tapestries.
The project comprises a 2,070 sqm extension (1,600 sqm of new construction and 470 sqm of refurbishment) of the Cité. New exhibition rooms allow the visitor route to be extended in order to display the contemporary works of its contemporary collection, its large hangings and to host longer and more varied temporary exhibitions.
This extension programme also aims to provide fitted-out spaces for the processing of archive holdings and tapestry cartoons, and includes the development of a professional hub at the Cité.
